The end - Lands End

The end - Lands End

WHY JOHN O'GROATS TO LANDS END?

Every year I'm looking for something new, something a bit more challenging than the previous year. In 2006 it was a big weight loss resulting in triathlons and the London to Brighton. 2008 saw the greatest achievement so far, the conquering of Mt Ventoux (but only on that occasion!).

2009 saw me achieve my Centurion status during Flat Out In The Fens.

I remember reading years ago, Miguel Indurain's comments when asked how he would eventually deal with his own demise as the best rider in the world.

"When I stop winning it will be a liberation which will put an end to my suffering" was his reply.

Well, Big Mig and I are at the opposite end of the same relationship with our bodies. His mind didn't let his body stop until there was nothing left. Me? I'll probably quit when I've had the best day I know I can possibly have.

So, although I'm using the attempt to raise money for a special charity (see column on left), this is also a journey of discovery and finding or developing the warrior athlete within me!

My ride will be completed unsupported over a period of, hopefully, no longer than 8 days in May. However if you'd like to see me 'en route', contact me for route details.

Days like this...

First of all I need to pay tribute to my gorgeous wife. "I suppose I'm going to be a cycling widow until May then?" "Yes you are really" I replied and so started our weekend. But despite her frustration she's been an absolute rock in looking after me, encouraging me, the home made soup etc!

OK on to the training for the weekend - and what a weekend it was.

Saturday, decided to stay close to home and was aiming for 6 laps of the route used for the Duston triathlon. This got so mind numbingly boring I could only face 4 laps but still mamaged 48 miles. Details;

48 miles, average speed 15.1 mph, total ascents 2450 feet.

Today Sunday was a bit different. I decided to attempt the Spires & Squires route, all 80 miles of it in conditions barely above freezing. At times I wondered about the wisdom of that choice; I faced frost so thick it may have been snow, sheets of ice which meant there was no chance of making up speed on the downhills, in fact I got very nervous when they appeared, temperatures close to zero if not below and driving snow at Naseby. Not ideal conditions to say the least when I could barely feel toes or fingers . But having completed the route, I realised that on the ride itself, I'll really benefit from training in condiions like this. OK, enoough of the self glorification, here are the figures;

Mileage 81 miles
Total time 6.29 (Spires & Squires route was 6.19 for those who know it)
Average moving speed 13.7 mph
Average overall speed 12.5
Moving time 5.53
Total ascents 4468 feet

Next week I may do less mileage and concentrate on hill climbing or speed work - honest Bonita!
